Engraving: art form and ancient technique

A beautiful engraving ennobles and embellishes a surface, this we all know. We have decided to pay homage to engraving techniques that have been important in the history of evolution, products arising from human intellect and creative ability, with a limited series of our Ovetti (eggs). To begin this show, we have chiselled the Ovetto using the laser in the same way as the Sumerians handled their stylus.

Our lasers engrave many types of metal, creating beautiful and functional textures. It is always thrilling to watch a flat, anonymous surface acquire its own personality as it is chiselled by light.

We reflected on the different forms of engraving that have been important in the history of evolution and have created a limited edition of our Ovetti (eggs).

Anaku: The Sumerians’ Egg

Cuneiform writing gradually spread across the Near East over 5000 years ago and was man’s first attempt at developing a code of communication that remained for millennia.
Unlike rock engravings, which depicted various types of figures and scenes, this system used straight lines and wedge-shaped marks to which sounds were associated.

These engravings were to all intents and purposes the prototype of more evolved writing, including our alphabet.
Numerous tablets made from fresh clay have stood the test of time and still survive today, and are bold witnesses to three millennia of culture.

As engravers, this seems the perfect place to begin: we have chiselled this Ovetto using the laser in the same way as the Sumerians handled their stylus.

Are you curious to know what the next Ovetto will be dedicated to? Keep in touch!
